We, the Australian people, believe in helmets and helmet laws...
...until...
...we need a good picture for a story & then it's 'whoopsie! - way too daggie!'

and if they cycled to Melbourne,we could give them a tax payer funded helmet for $5.(tragically,I've just bought my wife a $90 'designer' helmet for Christmas.Where were you when I needed you 7/11?)
ReplyDeletecheers,
Ian,
I've always noticed that when anyone wants to sell the image of cycling in Australia (but not the sport of cycling - why are these events always labelled 'challenges'... sigh.) it is almost invariably done without the helmets in sight... I wonder why?!
ReplyDeletePhotos either show people 'possibly' riding a bike without a helmet or walking/standing next to a bike without a helmet... very rarely is it on their head! Clearly being forced to wear a helmet is a deterrent to many.
For example: here.

The Bicycle Canberra blog spotted something very similar a couple of days ago:

I guess that young couple wouldn't have looked as pretty with the legal attire.
@Etienne
ReplyDeleteExcellent find. That further proves my point!

And guess what features in Australia's (cringeworthy) bid for the FIFA World Cup? That's right:
ReplyDeleteMelbourne Bike Share Bikes and neither are wearing helmets!!
Haha! Classic: http://bit.ly/fzoxji
So helmets don't affect the perception of cycling? Yeah right...
