An ode to science - not hope, not magic

(Images: Tim Minchin - Storm , YouTube)

"Throughout history every mystery ever solved has turned out to be NOT MAGIC!"

Awesome Tim Minchin!!! - and when he rants that 'alternative medicine has either not been proved to work or been proved not to work' my mind conjures up a parallel with crappy bicycle-protection spin pedalled by helmet rent-seekers; as yet unproven and still very much in scientific dispute.

  1. Speaking of medicine and parallels, this news item caught my eye the other day.
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-10-27/gps-advise-against-prostate-cancer-tests/4336840

"A group representing Australian general practitioners says the risks of being screened for prostate cancer outweigh the benefits."

"Screening for prostate cancer ends up doing more harm than good."

"Professor Del Mar says he is concerned about public awareness campaigns encouraging men to be screened for prostate cancer."

If we had mandatory prostate screening, (because it's for our own safety, your life is worth the cost of a test, and if it saves one life it's worth it, etc, ) then this news item would look almost exactly like an argument against mandatory helmet law.

  2. An ode to science - not hope, not magic - REALLY????

Except it is not usually science when multinationals and in particular pharmaceuticals sponsor research and only allow the "facts" that suit them to be released. Or for instance how they sponsor university researchers to bang on about how helmets save your life.

Tim Minchin is so unbelievably patronising here.

    1. I totally agree with you re multinationals and Big Pharma sponsored research and Big Helma sponsored university researchers - you'll just have to forgive me re being a bit of a 'tim-minchin' & 'class-1 evidence' tragic...

...taps into what you're saying (I think)
